A new multi-auditoria venue for East Kowloon

East Kowloon Cultural Centre, Hong Kong

Providing a new cultural facility to serve as a hub for theatrical, dance performance and community events for city districts: Kwun Tong, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon City, Sai Kung and the future Kai Tak area.

Challenge

Working in close collaboration with Rocco Design Limited, Theatreplan secured a contract to design a multi-auditoria facility on a 2.16 hectare site opposite Kowloon Bay MTR Station. The project required much discussion about the inclusion of a thrust stage theatre, a new format for Hong Kong.

Solution

Theatreplan is working a multi-disciplinary design team, providing a complete theatre consultancy service to create a new cultural performance complex in the Kwun Tong district for the Hong Kong Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Upon completion it will comprise a 1,200-seat lyric theatre, 550-seat thrust stage theatre, and three smaller studios with between 120 and 250 seats.

At an early stage in the project we undertook research into the history and use of the thrust stage to provide the client with a thorough understanding of this new form of staging for Hong Kong.

Result

Originally planned to be completed in 2016, the project has been subject to long delays and is now expected to open in 2020.
