An intimate and flexible black box theatre, Freespace is one of two venues located within the Park at the West Kowloon Cultural District.
Theatreplan was appointed by West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to deliver theatre consultancy and acoustic design services for the development of a 450-seat (900 standing) flexible black box theatre to provide an exciting new environment for live music, drama, dance and physical theatre as well as creating a platform to nurture local talent and energize the local performing arts scene.
A collaboration between architects, DLN, Theatreplan and sub-contract acousticians, Marshall Day, the venue has been designed to be quick and easy to reconfigure. Creative use of spaces and flexibility has driven its design. The performance space has anticipated flexibility and possibility in changes to adapt to different artistic requirements: floors can be trapped, seats can be added or taken away, parts of rails can be demountable, parts and the whole of the auditorium can be reconfigured, or even removed by employing reliable, cost effective stage technology.
Originally planned to be fast-tracked through the design and construction phases, the project timetable has been extended and is now due for completion in 2018.
