Theatreplan worked alongside architects, Bennetts Associates, on a major refurbishment at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow

First built in 1878 as Her Majesty's Theatre and Opera House, Citizen's Theatre has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending its rich history with technical advancements to future-proof it as a community space and cultural hub.
Theatreplan joined the project in 2014. The restoration and redevelopment presented unique challenges, particularly in working around the historic equipment and maintaining the building’s original structure. This required careful negotiation with Historic Environment Scotland, who permitted the removal of the roof and installation of the new fly tower, recommended by Theatreplan, on the condition that the historic drum and shafts were retained. This allowed for the - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would dramatically expand the venue’s technical capabilities and show capacity.
Key historic features, such as the Victorian understage machinery and two of the last working paint frames in the UK, were meticulously preserved. The upper circle, previously unsafe and uncomfortable, was completely re-raked and reseated, improving both safety and audience experience. Statues representing Shakespeare, Burns, and the four Muses, were rescued and reinstated, serving as a warm reminder of the building’s storied past.
The project introduced a host of technical innovations:
Fly Tower and Stage Trap System: The new fly tower and stage trap system enable increased load capacity and travel on the fly bars, and additional powered hoists allow for greater flexibility and variety within performances. The stage trap allows for dynamic scenery changes, enhancing creative possibilities.
Lighting & AV Infrastructure: Motorised front-of-house lighting bars, E-spool cable management, and adaptable production lighting boxes make rigging safer and more flexible. Dimming and AVB outlets/sockets are now easily accessible, futureproofing the venue's technical infrastructure.
Studio Theatre, Rehearsal and Participation Spaces A new studio theatre with flexible seating (up to 160) and a tensioned wire grid offers an inclusive environment for smaller productions, youth and community theatre. Additional learning and event spaces are equipped with modern technical infrastructure and are designed specifically to support and grow the theatre's community and creative learning work.
Accessibility: The project prioritised inclusivity, with improved wheelchair access throughout the auditorium and backstage, induction loops in all venues, and technical positions designed for safe access. The re-raked stalls and upper circle added new seating and flexible spaces, ensuring everyone can enjoy the theatre.
The project faced notable challenges along the way, including budget constraints, rising costs due to global events, and the need to adapt to evolving technology within the 12-year development period.
By honouring its historic character while embracing modern theatre technology and accessibility. the theatre is now equipped to inspire audiences and artists for generations to come. Our work ensures that the Citz will remain a cornerstone of Glasgow's cultural landscape, ready to meet the demands of contemporary theatre whilst celebrating its important history.
